It has always been my passion to instil a love reading and books among children. I believe that by exposing children to stories on a regular basis from an early age, we plant that seed and nurture that love for stories and thereby create lifelong readers.

In October 2011 as well as October 2012, I applied for SALI funding for Kaleido Book Buddies, a reading project that I initiated. I was granted the funding, and recruited 15 ladies (Book Buddies) in the Cape Flats area - 5 in Bonteheuwel, 5 in Langa and 5 in the Ottery/Park Wood Estate area. I trained them how to read and share books with children with the aim creating a love for reading and a passion for books.

I provided the Book Buddies with about 15 books each. They had to read and tell stories to children at their homes twice a week. The project has been so successful that I have continued to train volunteer Book Buddies to implement the project at several schools and libraries in Grassy Park and Bishop Lavis. At Kannemeyer Primary School in Grassy Park, for instance, the Book Buddies assist in the school library and also help children to read.

Through this project we encourage the Buddies join their local library, and to take the children to join the library and also to use the library space to read to the children. Through training more Buddies, I hope to encourage as many people as possible to establish the project in their areas, thereby causing an amazing ripple effect of reading to and with children, as this is the best way to create a culture of reading within our communities.

The success of the Book Buddies project motivated me to do a poster about the project. I presented the poster at the LIASA conference of October 2013 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Out of 28 entries, my poster won the first prize. This recognition is indeed inspiring to all of us involved in the Book Buddies project.
