Poet's Voice - Celiswa Majali

About Me
I am Celiswa Majali from Port St. Johns. I am studying towards a BA Degree Community Development at the University of South Africa. I am an author of a grade 10 novel, written in isiXhosa, titled: "Imbali Yentombazanana". I owe all my love for writing to my mother; she is illiterate, she always asked me to read for her from when I was eleven years old. We didn’t have libraries, and I didn’t want to read for her the same books I used at school over and over again. Therefore, I wrote short stories and novels for fun and to read something new for her during the evenings. Since then I fell in love with reading and writing novels, poetry and short stories. This year, 2013, through Centre for Creative Arts at the University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN), I facilitated creative writing programmes at Westville Prison for Time of the Writer and Poetry Africa festivals. At the end of the programme grade 12 inmates wrote short stories which were read during the 16th “Time of the writer” festival and performed their inspiring poems during the Poetry Africa festival.
