Positive Signs from Government

There have been encouraging signs that both the Departments of Education and Arts & Culture are concerned about books in local languages. They recognize that young children need to have access to story books in their own languages. They also recognize that there is an urgent need for all South Africans to have easy access to the books they want and need for their reading pleasure, education and personal development.

We are very proud to announce that we have distributed 8 books to 40 000 children and their families in 6 regions of the country. The findings from the project show more and more that access to picture books in their own language is essential for all children before they go to school. They learn early literacy skills, but best of all they are well on their way to becoming engaged lifelong readers. Baseline Study and Formative Evaluation reports of four pilot areas are available on request, email firstwords@nlsa.ac.za as well as a monitoring report of the new area of KwaZulu-Natal.
