Revitalising community libraries
The Department of Arts and Culture has allocated a sum of R1 billion to revitalise the country’s community libraries, to enable South African society to gain access to knowledge and information that will improve their socio-economic condition.
The grant will particularly be used to:
- Improved coordination and collaboration between national, provincial and local government.
- Transformed and equitable library and information services delivered to all rural and urban communities.
- Improved library infrastructure and services that reflect the specific needs of communities it serves.
- Improved staff capacity at rural and urban libraries to appropriately respond to community knowledge and information needs.
- Increase book stock, training librarians, increasing user access to libraries,
- To provide additional information communications technology and internet connectivity to support learning and skills development.
There will be a special focus
on the promotion and supply of
indigenous language material in libraries.
The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) is contributing to this Project by providing professional support to the Department for specific projects
