Centre for the Book: history of the building
This year we celebrate the centenary of the building that houses the Centre for
the Book and the laying of the first foundation stone in 1906. We have come a
long way since then and soon visitors can look forward to viewing a permanent
exhibition documenting the history of the building and its occupants.
We continue to host a range of functions and events in our beautiful building. The income is ploughed back into our book-related projects and we are happy to report that venue income has doubled over the past year. We have a lovely new burgundy carpet in the Main Hall with a luxurious feel and a significant improvement to the acoustics in the room. The Committee Room with its elegant hand-painted Italian tile fireplace and floor to ceiling windows is still a firm favourite for smaller functions.
Book launches, author discussions, writers workshops and all bookish events
are top of our list. Our regular clients host an interesting range of talks and
presentations, while local and international film companies periodically
transform our building. We have hosted fashion shows, weddings, recitals, photo
exhibitions and graduations to mention a few. Our elegant and historical venues
are one of a kind.
