Newspaper publishing in South Africa after 1994
by Douwe Drijfhout: 1994 must have been a turning point for most of South Africa's newspaper publishers. Ten years have passed since then. South Africa recently celebrated ten years of freedom. This also included ten years of freedom of the press. What impact did this have on newspaper publishing in South Africa? What happened to the alternative newspapers (struggle publications), which were funded by anti-apartheid organisations? The paper gives an historical overview of newspaper publishing in South Africa from 1994 to 2004 and will try to answer these questions. The year 1994 also marked the birth of the world-wide web. Has the Internet brought about the end of print editions?
