Professional Learning

Professional learning refers to learning and development of professionals in their post-qualification period up to the end of their careers. Being engaged in professional learning endeavours, professionals not only expand their knowledge base and stay up-to-date on new developments - thus improving their professional competence, but also address personal development. Learning activities may be formal or informal in nature, and range from lectures, coursework, conferences/seminars, workshops, in-service training to self-directed reading, and may even include obtaining a formal qualification.

1. Courses

BibSA is responsible for the training of resource description librarians in the correct use and application of the MARC 21 format as the means to produce standardised, computerised metadata records. The familiar teleMARC bibliographic (basic) course is an online course, normally presented during the first half of a year followed by a more advanced course, teleMARC bibliographic (beyond books), during the second half of the year. Upon request, we will present f2f (face-to-face) courses either at your site, or at the National Library. We are linked to the Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Library of Congress, Washington, DC and our MARC Certificate is a prerequisite to participate in Sabinet's OCLC systems training.

b) teleMARC bibliographic (beyond books) course

Course description
A MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data telematic course that supports learners to acquire competencies necessary to compile descriptive records for non-book material types generally present in information resource collections – i.e. sound recordings, visual materials, electronic and continuing resources – according to the eight areas of description in AACR2, and to assign suitable access points for successful information retrieval.

Content only available to registered participants.

Register for this course running between 05 November 2012 - 29 November 2012

2. Workshops

Referring to standards applicable to the description of information resources and the discovering of the recorded knowledge locked up in them, BibSA was involved in workshops during the 5th IFLA Meeting of Experts on an International Cataloguing Code(IME ICC5), preceding the 2007 World Library and Information Congress, Durban, South Africa. Other areas of contribution are the annual LIASA-IGBIS workshops, and an SABS/TC46 workshop, promoting Information & Documentation activities, including a series of meetings dealing with the change-over from the 10-digit ISBN, to the 13-digit number.

3. Seminars

With reference to the rapid strides by which electronic information develops in the modern Information Age, BibSA was further involved in a recent seminar RDA Lecture Series, 2009 where the new descriptive standard for information resources and successor to AACR2, RDA : Resource Description and Access, was introduced. Other areas of contribution deal with controlled name and series access points, and the eLearning environment.
