Libraries & Librarians

NLSA is not a lending library, so you have to consult material in the reading rooms or, where available, online. Please read our terms and conditions before you visit. We have four reading rooms in two buildings. We keep books and journals in both buildings and transfer them on request to the appropriate reading room by a regular van service. We encourage you to preorder material where appropriate. There is information about this in each reading room section in this part of the website.

The Southern African Interlending Scheme (SAIS)

The National Library is the hub of the resource-sharing network known as the Southern African Interlending Scheme (SAIS). Libraries and other information-related organizations, as well as individuals that are members of SAIS can borrow sources from one another. Journals are not lent out, but copies of articles are supplied instead. Any individual, library, organization or school may join the Scheme.

National and International Interlending service

National requests refer to all requests, either online or paper, that are received by the National Library’s Interlending Department from SAIS (Southern African Interlending Scheme) members for material held in the National Library’s own collections.

The International Interlending service sources material for Southern African clients, and supplies many International requesting libraries with material from our collection, or from other local libraries.
