ISAP is a subject indexing database to periodicals content. More than 1000 periodical titles are indexed, covering a broad spectrum of subject fields, e.g. natural sciences, humanities, education, medicine, technology, agriculture, theology and religion, public administration, business and industry. It does not reflect all legal deposit of South African periodicals, but comprises of a comprehensive selection of mainly scholarly journals and technical and subject general periodicals. A limited number of popular magazines useful in schools or adult basic education are included. A total of 640407 records (as by end March 2014) are available for searching on ISAP.

ISAP provides access to information through natural language keyword terms, controlled thesaurus terms and abstracts, and basic bibliographic description to an article title, author and journal reference. Research and use value in the South African context form the basis for subject selection for inclusion.

ISAP is updated on a quarterly basis. ISAP records are made available on Sabinet and through NISC via EBSCOhost as well as on the NLSA's own database ISAPOnline. Complete articles are obtainable from the NLSA Information Service Section or Document Delivery.

ISAP is represented on the Association of Southern African Indexers and Bibliographers (ASAIB).
