2014 5th Funda Mzantsi Championship

The National Library of South Africa, through its outreach unit, Centre for the Book, will host the 2014 5th Funda Mzantsi Championship in 06-08 October in George Civic Hall. This event is a partnership between the Centre for the Book and the Department of Correctional Services.

Over sixty book clubs have been established by the Centre for the Book in schools and correctional facilities, but only twenty eight of them will participate in the Funda Mzantsi Championship this year. All the participating book clubs are expected to do readings, book reviews and debate given topics. There will be four language categories, namely: IsiXhosa, English, Afrikaans and Setswana. Prescribed books are: Young Blood by Sifiso Mzobe, Ingqumbo Yeminyanya by AC Jordan, 'n Ander Ek by EKM Dido and Bogosi Kupe by DPS Monyaise.

The project theme is 'Developing Creative Minds' and aims to:
  • Encourage book discussions;
  • Instil the love and pleasure of reading books;
  • Improve reading abilities and book reviewing skills.
The panel of twelve adjudicators has been appointed and the majority of the book clubs have submitted their entry forms. The audience will be entertained by the inmates, learners and comedians.
