The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) through its outreach unit the Centre for the Book (CFB) in collaboration with the Department of Correctional Services and the George Municipality hosted the 9th Funda Mzantsi Championship (FMC) in the town of George, Western Cape from 01 to 05 October 2018 under the theme “Building Creative Minds”.

A record number of 72 book clubs competed in this year’s Reading Championship with more than 900 spectators making their way to witness the various categories of competition taking place, including Reading, Debating, Book Reviewing and a Spelling Bee. In this the 9th Funda Mzantsi Championship, learners from across South Africa belonging to book clubs established by the Centre for the Book competed in the 11 official South African languages.
