Implimentation of the resource description access (RDA) in South Africa

The NLSA facilitate the transition from AACR2 to RDA in South Africa.

RDA refers to Resource Description and Access and serves as the new cataloguing standard that is being implemented internationally, replacing the previous AACR2 standard. The major focus is to provide guidelines and instructions on the recording for all types of content and media, reflecting the attributes and relationships associated with entities as defined in Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD).

The topics covered include the differences between AACR2 and RDA for printed books; the creation of personal and corporate names in a bibliographic and authority record; the cataloguing of e-pubs, DVDs and CD-ROM’s; the importance of relationships, including how to create them amongst entities and attributes in an RDA record. Delegates were fascinated by the presentations covering the cataloguing of e-pubs and the importance of relationships. Delegates’ understanding was enhanced through the use of well-thought out, practical examples.

-       Hosted in Rustenburg at the Orion Safari Lodge on 25 and 26 August and attended by 32 delegates from provincial, public and community libraries in North West Province.

The topics covered included an overview of RDA, the differences between AACR2 and RDA and cataloguing rules for printed books.

As with previous workshops, delegates interacted with presenters, sharing knowledge, thoughts and interpretations. Through this, the organizers learned that feedback was generally positive and delegates experienced the presenters as experts in their respective fields. They were learning about RDA and sharing knowledge with colleagues brought a more practical experience to the workshop.
