The Centre for the Book is an outreach unit of the National Library of South Africa. Its mission is to promote a culture of reading, writing and publishing in local languages and easy access to books for all.

The core functions of the Centre for the Book:

  • Book development

Through its programmes, the Centre for the Book, advocates the importance of reading, writing and publishing for development and nation building. The Centre for the Book coordinates book related activities nationally, such as book discussions, poetry readings, book launches, writing workshops and conferences. The Centre converted one of its studios into a Children’s Reading Centre in partnership with Ukuhamba Nabatwana Trust. The Children’s Reading Centre provides opportunities to children from 0-7 years to read books for pleasure, write their own stories and be entertained by storytellers. The Centre also donates books and posters to schools, libraries, art centres and organisations involved in reading promotion.

The Centre for the Book is housed in a historic Edwardian building at 62 Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town and prides itself with beautiful facilities for hire. The main hall and committee room are available for hire. The main hall can accommodate 190 people seated (cinema style), 300 standing and 120 (gala dinner). The Committee Room can accommodate 80 people seated (cinema style), 100 standing and 30 workshop style.  For more information and venue hiring contract click here

The Centre for the Book is open to the public during weekdays from 08:00 to 16:30 or on appointment basis with the Programme Coordinators.
