The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) hosted the 2nd Regional Preservation Conference from 6 – 7 November 2025 at the NLSA’s Pretoria Campus. Hosted in celebration of World Digital Preservation Day, this year’s conference was held under the theme “Why Preserve”.

The conference focused on the importance of preserving cultural heritage, institutional memory, and public records in an age of rapid digital transformation. Attended by thought leaders, professionals, academics, and policymakers from SADAC countries such as Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho who exchanged knowledge, shared best practices, and reflected on the enduring value of preservation in the digital era.

Importantly, this regional gathering preceded the G20 Summit, which was hosted by the South African Government in November. The conference aims to contribute to the national dialogue on sustainable development, digital innovation, and heritage preservation as the foundational pillars of our shared future.

Outlining the purpose of the day, NLSA CEO, Dr Ralph Links highlighted the importance of hosting this conference, “Hosting the 2nd Regional Preservation Conference is not only a milestone for the NLSA, but it is a reaffirmation of our leadership role in advancing the regional and continental preservation agenda. The conference seeks to spark critical discussions on the value and purpose of preservation, not just from a technical perspective but from a cultural, educational and societal perspective. It invites each one of us to reflect on why preservation is important, more especially in the digital age”, he said.

The two-day gathering inspired new strategies on preserving and safeguarding documentary heritage as well as strengthening partnerships.
